The use of instructional technology tools is encouraged by the administration and faculty at Pearl River Community College. All classrooms are equipped with computers and data projectors. In addition, many rooms have Sympodiums and Smartboards.
Course Redesign
Course Redesign has begun in the mathematics department at the Poplarville Campus and is filtering to other disciplines and locations. Through Course Redesign, the mathematics department has evaluated best practices for helping students learn the necessary skills.
As part of this Redesign process:
- Students attend class approximately one hour per week. During class, the instructor demonstrates how to work exercises and answers questions in a whole group setting.
- Then, the student is required to visit the mathematics lab an additional two hours during the week. This time is not scheduled and allows the student the flexibility to attend the lab at times convenient to him or her. The mathematics labs are staffed by lab personnel and full-time instructors. While in the mathematics lab, the student is able to receive one-on-one attention from an instructor and is able to practice working problems until mastery is achieved.
Humanities
Several courses in the Humanities use MyWritingLab and MyReadingLab. These tools allow the students to practice skills that are taught in the classrooms.
Clickers
Some instructors choose to use "clickers" by eInstruction. These instructors will inform their students of the need to purchase a "clicker" from the PRCC Textbook Store.
