Computer Science workers in all areas are in high demand. Students who begin at PRCC and graduate with university degrees in computer science can look forward to rewarding careers in private and public sector positions with starting salaries 26K to 65K depending on the area of the country and the nature of the work. Many of our students have participated in the work-to-school program at Stennis Space Center.

Mississippi State, the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern Mississippi all offer degrees in Computer Science.

Pearl River's computer science faculty and student volunteers hold an annual programming contest for the district high schools in February. The competition is wonderful experience for all of the students involved and is sponsored in part by the PRCC student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. Winners at the district level advance to the State level of competition.

In April each year the community colleges in the state compete against each other in the Mississippi Community College Programming Contest held at a different Mississippi community college each year. All interested students are urged to participate as part of a contest team. Programming Contest Team members meet weekly to prepare for the competition. PRCC's teams have won Third Place (1992) Second Place (1995), and First Place (1997, 1998) in these competitions.
