Physics and Engineering Courses

Science at the River

Physics is the science that investigates the fundamental concepts of matter, energy and space and the relationships between them. The realms investigated by physicists extend from the largest possible structure (the universe) down to the smallest components of the universe (sub-atomic particles), and everything in between. Some of the general topics covered in physics include mechanics (the study of motion), heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and atomic structure.

A degree in physics qualifies a person for employment as a physicist, astronomer, mathematician, engineer, or teacher. A degree in physics is also an excellent preparation for medical, dental, or law school.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics are offered at all of the major universities in Mississippi.

Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to the design, construction, and operation of economical and efficient structures, equipment, and systems. An engineering major at Pearl River Community College can earn eighteen semester hours of transferrable credit in mathematics, ten hours in physics, and most of the other courses required in the first two years at schools of engineering in Mississippi and neighboring states.

Universities in Mississippi with engineering programs are Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi offers degrees in Engineering Technology.
